It’s the last day of Aug and as I reflect fondly on the summer so far I am very excited about all the glory fall will bring.
This year I did not feel ripped off, summer is feeling just about long enough (almost). We enjoyed beautiful warm weather with the perfect balance of hot sunny days and the reprieve of cooler nights.
My boys were actually a delight, they entertained themselves a lot, without getting physical. They made their own meals and graciously helped out whenever I asked. They are at wonderful ages (13, 11, 8) when we can really enjoy each other’s company, laugh about the same things and savor simple pleasures such as a fun card game or riding bikes outside for hours hitting the various dirt jumps they build…then again splashing in a giant mud puddle never really gets old.
The produce in the fields is looking fantastic which gets me very excited about our first FarmClub share pick up coming up on Thursday Sept 10. We are looking forward to sharing the goodness with the family, friends and neighbours that pre-ordered – thanks again!
I would say this time of the year is peak farm season. There are oats, peas and barley to be harvested and stored, hay to cut and bail, as well as plenty of vegetables to pick and wash, followed by more field work for next year’s season. That would be enough to keep us all busy for a few months, but things are being cranked up a notch now that Josh has successfully secured organic milk quota (massive applause/cheers here). This means a new revenue source …and more work. Josh and Peter will be milking and caring for about 80 cows twice daily (I’ve lost count)…as well as producing beef, lamb, veg and pies. The feats of productivity around the farm never cease to amaze – the results always impress me. Milk drinkers rejoice – Belanger Organic Farms is producing grass fed, organic milk – the best kind of milk there is (in my view).
Watching all this production, productivity and problem solving is mind boggling. Before I came to the farm, I was actually proud of my work ethic, around here I feel like a total sloth.
Based on the amount of work to be done around here you will be seeing more pics than words in the upcoming blogs. I plan to do some serious baking, freezing and preserving and will try to post some videos of my adventures on my YouTube Channel…let’s see how that goes…stay tuned.
